8 Weeks Old!

Graham on left, Gatlin on right. Oh how I love these boys of mine. Their smiles, their sweet noises and how they talk to me. Graham has proven to be quite the talker and the motivated one, already reaching for things and regularly rolling from stomach to back on his slightly inclined bed. Gatlin is the quiet, laid back observer of life content to just soak in attention and the ongoings of the world around them. Both are continually smiley, happy little men.

4 youngest
Just talking to them. And their cloth diapers are currently out of service due to needing new velcro sewn in. So, they are temporarily in disposables. I forgot how much I dislike them until I had to use them again. Gatlin is still the heavier one...quite obviously...but Graham is not wasting any time in catching up. Funny that Gatlin was born the smaller one...by a mere 2 ozs. 7'7 and 7'5. Now around 9 and 11 lbs!

Two sweet boys

Paying a visit to Daddy

You gotta love the reflectors. You can't see much but still a pretty cool pic.
My sweet red and bald headed boys

Christmas with Granny
And Christmas with Papa Pat

Taking care of her
His pride and joy...the most treasured Christmas present ever for him. A Red Ryder bb gun...in which it only took 5 hours to shoot out the anti kid, less than wonderful neighbors' glass door. Thankfully they only show up to hunt in season and mow in the summer. But....it's kinda hunting season right now. Garrison's only regret..."Mom, I REALLY wish the wind hadn't blown my bullet ALL the way over to their window." And there was no way his little red headed twin was ever in his life getting a bb gun for Christmas. The house wouldn't be standing and we'd probably have kids missing eyeballs. Grant, however, was not heartbroken about it and was way more concerned with his camo toy rifle, though he did ask..."Mom, when may I have a real bb gun like Garrison? When I'm his age?" And somehow he's the one voraciously reading and doing math already.

Finally getting to hit something other than cans, cardboard boxes and glass doors. His 1st real barn rat caught in one of Grayson's traps.

Mischievous little Ivye-girl. She rivals anything and everything Aubrey ever was and did when she was her age. Yesterday she emptied 2 entire boxes of games in which she used a chair to get to the box freezer top and then hoisted a chair up to where she now stood, and stood on it on top of the freezer to reach the cabinet above. She then continued on to down 1/2 a bottle of nail polish while hiding in the closet. Poison control one more time. Apparently acetone makes you amazingly sleepy so she took a great nap! You learn something new everyday. May try going that route more often. Just two of the many, MANY things she gets into these days...like unrolling 3 rolls of toilet paper at a time, emptying the entire contents of 2 lotion bottles onto the computer monitor and keyboard, pouring the good shampoo down the shower drain, conditioning her hair during daytime, non-bath hours with 3/4 of the bottle of conditioner, eating almost the entire bottle of old Tums...needless to say, she was heartburn free for a few days...pouring herself the entire box of cereal for breakfast, feeding the cat all of the newly opened 10 lb bag of cat food, inking every flat surface in this house, filling her sippy cup with 1/4 gallon of milk and so forth. Her personality is amazing. She's so entirely good natured and highly social, conversing with anyone and everyone and harboring no bashful bone in her tiny little self.....but she is tenacious, mischievous and highly driven in every way....one of the many reasons blogging is a rare occurance at this particular time in life.

While on the phone with poison control Grayson burst through the door shouting "Rattlesnake!", grabbed his .22 and was out the door again. Middle of winter when it should be snakeless season. One accurately placed shot to the head while he sat coiled in striking position. What Grayson came back with. 45 inches, 11 rattles and 1 button.

'Tis the Season

I'll preface this with the fact that our children do not believe in Santa. Though we humor the season and do family pictures with him at the dept Christmas parties, watch fun Christmasy Santa movies, and make Santa cookies, they are quite grounded in reality. So, just as the children know there is no woman flying around in the middle of the night with a fat wallet and a bag of teeth, no cupid kids taking people out with a bow and arrow and no rabbits that go around laying eggs....since when did rabbits lay eggs anyway....so they also know that a massive dude with flying reindeer living in sub zero temperatures dressed in a vibrant house robe with an equally colorful nightcap and black mud boots does not truly exist either. I have no issues in the least with those that do let their children believe and go with the whole Santa thing for Christmas...it's just what we've chosen to do and what we feel is right for our own family and what we are trying to instill within our own children.

Some call it Scrooge, some tend to think our children are deprived....I tend to think they're grounded in reality. I can't quite rationalize the hypocrisy of telling our children lies when we are continually telling them and raising them to be completely upright and honest people. And people argue this point to death...especially in the circles large families tend to frequent....and I do agree that those who let their children believe in Santa are far from raising compulsive liars. That theory is laughable, at best. But the world tends to be completely black and white to this heart of mine and the big jolly fat guy.....along with the egg laying rabbits, killer cupids and crazed night owls loaded with a bag of teeth....falls in the black and white category. He either exist or he doesn't. I'm not real in love with lying to them for the 1st however many years of their life only to break it to them later and explain how I lied to them for years on end, all while disciplining their untruthful ways.....not to mention that Santa and his modern day reputation is nothing but greed....the I want's and what can I get's. The attention is taken completely away and shifted from the birth of Jesus and the absolute depth of the meaning of Christmas to a rotund dude in a big red robe that tells you to make lists of everything your greedy little heart wants. Scrooge, perhaps....but true none the less. I'm not into Christmas to create greedy little souls and have them making lists of every toy in every mail order catalog that arrives. I'm in it to teach them what it is to bless others, to give from their heart and create in them the willingness to die to self such as the gift that they were given in the life of Jesus. It's not about them....it's about the absolutely amazing birth of Jesus, what they have been given and how to give back just as they were given to. Christmas is about blessing others.

Next year we have a radical plan to not do gifts at all but to just spend a week away as a family in a cabin in the mountains....isolated from the commercialization and focusing on the actual reason for Christmas, the depth of it and what we were given in the birth of Jesus and in His death, what we have in each other as a family, what it is to give to others, the joy that comes while watching them receive, and just having fun together as a family....away from the stress, the greed, and the "me" factor. We'll do a simple tree up in the snowy mountains of New Mexico, do easy meals and invest in a ton of family games before we leave. We'll spend the days in the snow and spend nights by the fire playing family games and eating popcorn, laughing until we cry and making memories that last an entire lifetime... rather than giving toys that they will probably not remember by Christmas of next year. If all goes well it may become a tradition.

The more children we have, the older we grow and the more time that elapses the more we both realize it's just not about the stress that surrounds this season or the monetary purchases. It's what we make of it as a family and what we want to instill within our children and the heart of giving in every way. Giving to those that the Lord lays on each of our hearts. Giving back in thanks for the many things we have been given or blessed by throughout the year. Everyday is about giving back for us...but in this season, just as the wise men laid it at the feet of Jesus, so we lay gifts at the feet of those that He lays on our hearts as we seek to bless others. It's going to be an amazing transition and the children have begged to try and pull the plan off this year. They are ecstatic about making the change from receiving in such abundance from everyone to giving out of the joy of their hearts and creating with their hands what they can give. They're excitement excites my own heart and we all eagerly anticipate the arrival of next Christmas, as we have more time to plan and make arrangements for travel.

So, back to Santa....they are told the truth. The truth that St Nicholas really did exist and the whole story of his life and legend and how the modern day Santa came to be known. The lttle ones often get the story screwed up though and upon being told that St Nicholas did once live but is dead now sweet four year old Garrett gleefully told both our Santa believing friends, and then Santa himself, when seeing him walk through the door..."Santa is dead." I laughed at that one. But, they do know Santa is not real and never has been. After telling the story over and again this year Grant did come to me and say...."Mom, so the real St Nick gives real gifts but the fake Santa gives fake gifts?" Ummmm......no, son. But, I suppose he's headed in the right direction.

And on a funny "the things they say" note. Garrison came to me a few weeks ago and began the following conversation.

Garrison..."Mom, when you die I don't want Daddy to ever get married again."

Me..."Why?"

Garrison..."Cause I just don't."

Me..."Ok, buddy. But when I die and if it's when you're still little the Lord might just send somebody to Daddy to help take care of him like I do and help take care of you too. It'd be lonely without a mom. But the Lord would make sure she was just perfect and that she'd love you sooooo much....just like I do. Or maybe he wouln't send anybody either. I don't know. But I don't plan on dying anytime soon so don't worry about that stuff now, buddy."

Garrison...."Nope. I've decided I don't want anybody else."

Me..."Why?"

Garrison....."Cause you take sooo many showers every day. You're just so clean and you just always smell so good and you're pretty. So....I just want you."

Well...I suppose it's nice to know you're loved, cherished and longed for by your children because you shower twice a day and use Bath and Body Works body spray.

And having 10 kids does have its perks. Due to sheer volume of kids Santa now makes personal home visits!

Upon getting the news that he was coming the children and I went on a 2 hr fanatical cleaning frenzy in which we cleaned everything from top to bottom and restrung our pathetic, 1/2 lit Christmas tree and decorated the entire thing. I told the children Santa was going to have to go on Prozac if he saw our sad excuse of a tree in the state it was in....1/2 lit, looking like it'd been run over by a mac truck and 1 lone obnoxious ornament 1/4 of the size of the tree. After a harried morning and putting in a desperate call for working husband to come home and detail the bathrooms all was well and good ole Santa did not end up being cemented to the floor or super glued to the couch. Bathroom cleaning husband teased that the South Pole Santa was on his way with the health dept in tow. So, the health dept didn't end up showing up...but at least they could have and we wouldn't have been in danger.

Just chillin' with Santa and the loot he brought with him

Holding Mountain Santa's walking stick. Henry made the stick himself and carved the Santa at the top of it..the top you can't see in this pic.

Who knew little kids could hand feed the big guy.

He's looking a little more like a member of the KKK Christmas sect rather than a skinny Santa Jr but it's the only good shot I got of the hand carved Santa at the top of the stick along with the holly, ribbon and bells.

Ummmm....Mother Christmas? And if you look close you'll figure out that Grant has his arms wrapped around Garrett and Gavin and he's the one holding the guns. Not exactly sure what Garrett and Gavin are doing...besides not paying attention to having their pic taken. And Graham had fallen asleep so he missed out on Mother Christmas.

I really love the reindeer look attached to the whole Santa garb.

Yet more anonymous Santas

How many little boys can you fit in a Santa coat made for a 6'3 man?

Santa in his everyday attire.

On a more serious note....this has to be one of the kindest, most generous and loving men I've ever known. How grateful we are to have Henry as part of our lives and how blessed I am by his continual kindness and how he loves and continues to give to our family in so many countless ways. Time and the investment into our children's lives is a lifetime gift. He is amazed and in awe of our children and we are just as equally amazed and grateful for his presence in our lives and his willingness to teach our children a trade, and skills that expand so far beyond mere taxidermy. He continues to give in so many ways to our family. His personal reputation is amazing and he is the most renowned taxidermist in this part of Texas....and we have the honor of him training our children and investing into our lives in so very many ways. We are entirely blessed to have him in our lives.
Evye was invited to the shop a few weeks ago to see what it is Grayson does while he works and see if it interested her at all. She proved to hold her own well amidst the guys and intrigued them by her willingness to help and learn, and her intense interest in it all. It went so well that she was invited back again and she impressed them even more the 2nd day. So, Henry offered her a place alongside Grayson two days a week. So it is that we have two taxidermying children. On the slow days they do woodwork, build birdhouses, do bead and leather work and a ton of arts and crafts. I'm so grateful for this opportunity. Not only are Grayson and Evye hunting regularly but Garrison gets to make his first hunting trip after the first of the year. I go next week! It's been awhile since I've been out there and I may find my need for glasses greater than I anticipated....but I plan on shooting....whether I hit something or not.

Henry loving on his honorary grandbabies

So, this wasn't exactly the end of the year family picture I had in mind but it works well and gets us all in there.

And new pictures of babies. Graham's red hair is finally visible in some pics. And sweet baby Gatlin boy is still just as bald as ever. There's a little sneak peak going on at the nape of his neck in a tiny tuft of hair. When it does finally start to grow, based on what I can see, I think it's going to be about the color of Ivye's.

Picture Day

Sooooo...in the enlarged picture of this it is royally evident that Garrison's chin met up with Evye's fingernail as they wrestled, Aubrey was knocked into the metal bunkbed and has a bruised cheek..then proceeded to try and help herself out by putting a band aid on it and then rip it off when she decided she didn't like it so much. So, in addition to the bruised cheek she proceeded to give herself a black eye from her band aid removal efforts. Evye has a massive whelp and cut on her forehead due to being hit by Grant during a rock throwing game they had going...yep, a rock throwing game. Just because they make A's obviously means nothing as to the intelligence going on within. And then Grant is sporting a lovely rock chip on his forehead from the afore mentioned game. You gotta love picture days!!! They all did great though and we walked away with some pretty awesome stuff.

Hitchin' a ride with Daddy...dusty!

The cat in this one was entirely spontaneous. That's how much they just love kids. I guess when you've got this many going...both cats and kids alike....they're bound to be a little partial to company and a social life. So, the cats all wandered out to the pasture with us. What you can't see are the 5 other ones below the feeder.....cats, not kids, that is. And the rooster to the left of Aubrey is Bert. His twin, Ernie, missed out on the family pic and his moment of stardom.

My little tiny man, Graham

Perfect baby doll boy, Gatlin. How much I love these boys of mine.

Lighting was behind them, which I should've thought about, but still kinda cool.

I love Graham's board straight position in Aubrey's arms and his perfect, tiny feet just sticking out there

Pictures are hard work...and no, they don't ride around like this. They're still so tiny they're almost completely sideways in those seats.

I Miss Blogging

Sweet growing boys. 6 weeks old already! Graham continues to stay on the little side for now, weighing in at a whopping 8'8 while tubby boy grows and grows and grows tipping the scale at 10'8. Good news is that Graham is growing just perfectly and gaining weight nicely...just not quite as fast as his voraciously growing twin. Both boys are well and perfect in every way. Graham has a head full of red hair...yet another red headed boy!!....while Gatlin is as sweetly bald as it gets.

Garrett.....finally getting his turn to hold a baby.

Our look alike Baby A's and Baby B's....except it gets confusing and the the look alikes are in opposite outfits. Had I known they'd be such great comparison pics I would've put them in the same colors and on the same sides as the twins that paved the road just barely 6 years before them!
Graham in blue, Gatlin in cream. 6 weeks old.

Garrison in cream, Grant in blue. Taken when these little guys were 5 months old.
Two little Baby A's crying, Two big Baby B's just hanging out.

Trying to capture his smile...which he does entirely well these days. Sweet, sweet boy.

Getting sweet, handsome smiles from Graham too
Grayson's 1st big buck. He scored a 70. Grayson made the shots that took both deer down from 150 yards away and in the dark. His eyesight and ability to shoot is absolutely amazing. We've target shot for years with the children but his ability to really get out there and hunt is proving to be amazing. These were also his first deer to process completely on his own from gutting to skinning to harvesting and cleaning the meat. Evye was elbow deep into it helping him all the way while the little ones stood around completely enthralled with it all. The meat now fills our freezers and the big buck will be his 1st shoulder mount while the smaller buck will be a euro mount and a rug...all of which he is doing. He continues to amaze me. And Evye is now not only shooting like a pro but helping process too. I'll shoot but I'm not much into processing. Nastiness.

Juggling an armful of babies....and no, she doesn't walk around like this.
Happy boys and a sister that absolutely adores them.

Garrett loves just holding them.
Cold winter family nights spent watching Christmas movies. 1,800 sq ft and somehow we manage to all 12 end up in about 150 of it.
Why I rarely blog anymore. These activities fill our days...along with nursing some infinitely hungry, growing boys. And I didn't do any of this....except hot glue the sides together since I got soooo sick of waiting for the icing to dry and seal the thing together. Not so surprisingly, much to the older three's horror, all the little colored candies on top were devoured within 2 hours of having decorated it. The wreath, gumdrop entrance, window candies and gummy animals mysteriously disappeared today. Notice in the 2nd picture the row of rooftop candies that had already been eaten before we could even take the picture! They got in trouble for that so the rest of it lasted for another 2 or so hours.

Graham was sleeping and Garrett, Grant and Ivye were outside playing. Nothing like spontaneous pictures!
Just loving on him

After bathtime
One of many things showing up in the traps these days. Two days after this he caught a raccoon that filled up the entire cage. As of now, he has taken the record for the largest possum, coon and snake to go through the shop.

And I do miss blogging.....but how entirely thankful I am for the reason my time is being spent elsewhere right now. Right now days are spent nursing, schooling, playing and sleeping when I can while late shift nights are spent nursing and spending one on one time with older children. I am still very much alive and quite happy. Admittedly, it has been very difficult to figure out how to manage my time and prioritizing has become a massive part of my days. I suppose it always was but so much more so now than ever......and the "extras" were what had to go for this season in life...most of my computer time being part of the "extras". It won't last forever...no season ever does....which makes it tolerable, but I still miss the peace that writing brings with it in the quiet of the day. But, honestly, there is not much quiet that exists right now and when quiet does pervade I end up with sleep inadvertently claiming me. I'm still very much learning how to manage time again....restructuring our days and just trying to fit everything within the few hours a day provides. Along with the usual responsibilities, raising a pre-teen boy is proving to be emotionally exhausting somedays, and as much as I have loved every stage the children grow through I will acknowledge that this part of it has challenged me more than any other stage of growth ever has. That, coupled with newborn twins and every age in between, makes for some very interesting days. But how bittersweet this time is...how fast it goes. Crazy, chaotic, noisy days filled with growing children..babies that just don't stay little and children that grow into beginning adulthood. How thankful I am for their growth..the character being taught and establishing itself in older ones.... and the longer intervals of sleep at night provided by much younger ones but how bittersweet it is to watch the time pass. It seems like such perfectly orchestrated timing as I listen to sweet oldest boy...not so long ago still very much a baby like the ones I hold.....as his voice changes and he transitions from boy to man child. Responsibilities grow, opportunities and horizons beyond our little world expand exponentially. I listen and see these changes taking place before my eyes and I miss the baby he once was yet I marvel at these two new sweet boys just beginning this journey of life and what they will be in a mere 12-13 years. How naive I was to think as I cradled firstborn baby in my arms almost 13 years ago that this day was so far away.....13 years...a lifetime away from that moment. Time is a cruel reality and I've learned to treasure each day I have with them..because it just doesn't last forever. They grow, they change in such amazing ways and the clock is relentless in its vigil. How grateful I am for the life and the busyness of our days....the love, contentment and fulfillment that bathes our world in color.
