Labor of Love: Let There Be Color!

So let's not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don't give up.

Therefore, whenever we have the opportunity, we should do good to everyone - especially to those in the family of faith.

As we wage war with what we spiritually battle right now the verse above continually comes to mind hundreds of times throughout the day. It is my motivation to press through what satan is trying to throw at us as we walk this out.  While much is not written here now, our story will only grow more interesting over time as entirety of it all is made known. For truly we learn more intimately everyday that we are not fighting against flesh and blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places. Or as the message version states, which I typically am not entirely in love with but fits rather appropriately here...

"God is strong and He wants you strong. So take everything He has set for you, well made weapons of the best materials. And put them to use so you will be able to stand up to everything the devil throws your way. This is no afternoon athletic contest that we'll walk away from and forget about in a couple of hours. This is for keeps, a life or death fight to the finish against the devil and all his angels."
Eph 6:12

Here's to hoping it looks better on the walls than it does in the can.

While we battle the worst stomach virus our family has had in a very long while, progress has slowed a bit. And while I have pulled a couple of all nighters with sick kids and been able to accomplish quite a bit of painting in the process, we still have quite a bit left to go. With family visiting in only 9 more days my goal is to have most of the kitchen/living area complete by arrival time. Floors will, of course, come last, after all painting has been completed. So, up until that point, any and all visiting friends and family will be exposed to....subfloors! With kids still strung out all over beds and floor pallets I think I may get brave today and actually attempt to paint during daylight hours. This could get interesting.

Loving on his buddy.

2 of my 5 male companions for the day. Appliance loading and unloading, box carrying/gathering, and errand running company. How in love I am with these boys.

Grape loving fruit bat.

The new view. I never grow tired of this. So ready for some cabinet doors and a painted back door. Oneday....when I have a thing called spare time again. Landlord is pretty in love and amazed by what he sees.

Shortened and almost ready for the new hood/microwave! With more OT on the next few checks we will install new countertops and backsplash.

English tea date with sweet friend and all....4....girls! Aubrey saw fit to remind everyone that Lillye is indeed having her 1st tea time with us also. And yes...it's a casual little place so we did it in jeans and t shirts....with hats provided upon arrival.

My new favorite isle. I could spend hours...and a ton of money....here.

And.....why we wear helmets! Although after this stunt I'm thinking maybe we need to transition over to full face. 2 minutes of tears, soap, washcloth and a dab of neosporin later..and he was back at it again...except on 2nd attempt he cleared it!

All the ways he loves me. In the thick of it, 2 trips to the ER, 50 thousand emptied trash cans and 30 showers later the little love gifts he returns with when on his Gatorade missions. A little tiny crowbar and hammer! It doesn't get much cuter...and more practical...than that!

And round 2 of a fairly sizable twin difference.

Difference in shoulder height is still amazing to me.

And it's out! Old range hood. The level of nasty we fight in this house, as we conquer one room at a time. It appears that somebody set a fire in the house at some point. Kinda made me laugh. Can't exactly say I haven't been tempted to do the same.

Just plain nasty....and beyond.

Ready for color! I love how excited they get over each new step of this project.

And so the color begins...
Personally I'm kind of amused by the entirely pregnant chick in the reflection. Since we have no full length mirrors in the house yet, nor have we since being here, I didn't realize baby had grown quite so much. That's what happens when you give up picture journaling a pregnancy due to all the psycho pregnant picture stalkers that lurk in the shadows waiting for new pics. They're pretty hard up if they find something to do with this one. Kinda makes me laugh.

Still wet and not it's true color yet. But sooo excited to finally have it on the walls.
So, I read that painting baseboards same color as walls not only limits the scuff/dirt factor but also makes room appear taller and therefore larger. However...after my experience with this....I just really kinda hate it. A lot. So, sanding, repriming and painting them white to match the ceiling trim. But, walls really kinda look like one big avocado at this point.

How kids have looked the last 6 days of our life.

Lots and lots...and lots..... of sheet changes. I have never in my life been so overwhelmingly grateful for a new working washing machine and a dryer that actually dries.

The only way to contain his puke. I'm thinking I might could just make a ton of money if I invented little infant puke bags....about like attaching a feed bag to a horse....except it'd be a puke bag to an infant.  One of the ones that ended up in the ER. Not a fun way to spend your 1st birthday....at. all.

And all the productivity that goes along with pulling all nighters with sick kids! Yep...I even got the bottom of the peninsula accomplished too.

Gotta love all the kitchen drawers STILL sitting on the fireplace. Oneday. I did manage to get the bookshelf stripped down and decrapped. After getting the big wall painted we'll start on the bookshelf portion. Baseboards....yep...they're NOT staying green.

When daddy comes home to help deal with seriously sick kids even he gets a few of the to-do's knocked out too. Installing the new electric for the new hood.

I just really really love sanding. As in...I have a new hobby. Power tools, drills and a bunch of crap needing to be sanded. Once I finished this pile I went through house taking doors off just for the sheer love of sanding stuff. It does the mind good to escape trash cans, get out in beautiful weather, listen to the healthy kids play...and just work.

Sick hair. I think you have to work at getting your hair this messy.

And it's in! It was just a little bit heavy. New counters and backsplash to come! And cabinet doors. Yep....the doors. Someday.

Poor buddy. His Ergo came and he couldn't even enjoy it.

On the hard days and days the heart longs for comfort of home it helps when children come in with pictures like these. We have a pretty amazing life....and our street...it's just a pretty quaint little place to be.

Sweet, hard falling Carolina rain. Something that never....ever...grows old.

Meanwhile....on the inside....

Maybe if I say this dog isn't our's enough it really will go home. And yes...she's sitting on the toilet watching splashing babies. That had to be around the 10th bath they'd had that day. Go home, little doggie, go home. It's about to earn a new nickname...that's not entirely G rated.

Life beyond the trash can! Despite a breezy 54.....windows thrown open, doors open, heaters on, kids piled under blankets, house airing out and being cleaned...and then more paint! Supposed to be a beautiful 63 and 75 the next couple of days. Looks like we have a 1st birthday to celebrate, weather to soak up, and a house to throw wide open to spring....which means backdoor can be taken off hinges to paint!

And yep....that's just the entire bookshelf contents boxed in background and all of house project stuff spread out all over table. When nobody eats for days it's kinda easy to create indoor work surface on massive dining table. Although...some mysterious little 4 year old girl did see fit to finger paint some green on fancy folding table. And apparently Mr Eraser just doesn't take Valspar wall paint off.

Labor of Love: The Kitchen Continued

Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
Matthew 6:21

At this point there's just not a bunch of time left to write much of anything. So...once more, progress pics will have to suffice. Living area has yet to have a coat of paint put on it. The 12 hour OT shifts make for nights spent snuggled up in bed with a husband rather than painting til ungodly hours of the early morning. And while I long to have at least this portion of the house overhaul complete I'd much rather be hanging out in comfort with some pretty sweet company.

As we work we treat many many house issues that have gone undiscussed on the blog. The more we work the more we discover issues, varying from minor to entirely major, that must be dealt with...as any old house renovation typically goes. Some stuff we knew, as it had become painfully obvious, while others only become known as we begin to uncover spaces. So, lengthy delays in getting to certain aspects of projects usually mean there is something more major being treated behind the scenes and we will be able to move on as soon as that hurdle has been overcome.

But...I can truthfully say that as we work the anger has substantially decreased and the level of joy only increased. And while there is no desire in me whatsoever to ever buy this house the Lord has been faithful to finally make it home for us as we work, investing so much of ourselves and the resources He has been so faithful to give us.

Cabinet day has come!!!!

The wall....before....

Getting ready to get serious...

We had planned to shorten it up to highest shelf level but in the removal of lower part we also discovered that cabinets did not extend all the way to ceiling. Complete removal of entire thing would not require ceiling retexturing, as we had assumed. Suddenly removing it completely became a very viable option. After much debate it was decided to remove entire cabinet and relocate shelving to kitchen located laundry closet to make up for storage that was coming down. So, in the end we still have all shelving and storage that was removed...just relocated above washer and dryer! I am in awe of friends who come to stand by our side, aid us in this project, and offer assistance any way they can. It's pretty amazing to be so surrounded by love.

The after!!! We can see!!! Airflow has been greatly enhanced and it's already proven to be much more climate controlled just due to air being able to flow freely. The whole house grew twice in size it seems and there is light!!!...when it's not dark outside.

When we thought we'd just shorten it.....
I laugh at the hours we spent priming and painting portion we were supposed to keep. If only we had known!

So....the whole renovation is just a little bit messy. Oneday our house will be back in order. But for now...the work in progress....all the beautiful ugly. The before view from living area to kitchen...

And the view from living area now...

Next up...removing old range hood, lifting cabinets above stove and installing new range hood/microwave.

The window obstacle....
Before.

It was only primed and painted to cut off point. The idea was to shorten it also to provide more light in kitchen due to kitchen staying so dark day and night. And just to update it.

The result! This is obviously far from finished too, but...making progress!! And yes....I took this one out completely on my own. The goal now is, instead of shortening it, to just remove wood shelf piece that had been covered by massive obstacle, lift light above sink to ceiling height and update light fixture. That's on the agenda for today!

And just how massive the wood above window really was. We finally were able to measure and found that it's almost the exact size of a twin headboard! Pictures do not even begin to do the size of this justice. To say the kitchen is lighter and brighter after the removal of this is just a slight understatement.

And my God shall supply all your needs according to His riches in glory.

Always be full of joy in the Lord. I say it again...rejoice and be happy! Let everyone see that you are considerate in all that you do....

Don't worry about anything but instead pray about everything. Tell God what you  need, and thank Him for all He has done. THEN you will experience God's peace, which far exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus....

Fix your hearts on what is true, honorable, right, pure, lovely and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise. Keep putting into practice all you learned and have received from Me- everything you heard from Me and saw Me doing. Then the God of peace will be with you....

I have learned how to be content  with whatever I have. I have learned how to live with almost nothing or with everything. I have learned the secret of living in every situation, whether it is with a full stomach or empty, with plenty or little. For I can do everything through Christ who gives me strength. Even so, you have done well to share with me in my present difficulty....

At the moment I have all that I need...and more! I am generously supplied with the gifts you sent me. They are a sweet smelling sacrifice that is acceptable and pleasing to the Lord.  And this same God that takes care of me will supply all your needs from His glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus....and which you have been so faithful to share.

Philippians 4

After searching the world over for a frig and one avenue after another falling through, as funds are limited and we work on a strict, small budget with little to no wiggle room, we received a message saying this was waiting for us to come pick it up. Our 3 week indoor camping experience has come to an end and we now are back to all working appliances! While I think appliances in general are still a bit of a luxury when looking at the poverty level of the majority of the world they certainly aid one's cause in running a household. After 3 weeks of living out of an ice chest...we have a frig! God is good and His mercy endures forever.

New textbooks! Dave Ramsey homeschool edition for high schoolers "Foundations in Personal Finance" concerning personal money management with extra chapter "The Power of Giving"!! Pretty excited to add this to their Teaching Textbooks math curriculum. It's like getting Christmas in the mail! We love Dave Ramsey! So excited they get the opportunity to learn personal money management this young and, hopefully, avoid the mistakes we have made along the way. Can't wait to start it! Husband and I have already completed Dave's Financial Peace University. Hoping this curriculum is just as amazing and impacts our children as strongly as what we have learned from his principles in FPU.
